Liver Support
Supporting liver function and detoxification goes a long way in one’s ability to handle the various medications that Lyme patients may need to take. Most medications clear through the liver and kidneys which places extra strain on both organs.
Many people who are chronically ill have impaired detoxification pathways anyway, which may manifest in symptoms such as headaches, skin eruptions, fatigue and sluggishness, allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities. Medications further compound the issue.
Herbs and nutrients tailored toward liver health can keep liver enzymes in normal range while on medications. They help clearance of those medications and other toxic compounds in the body, and keep hormones balanced via healthy metabolism of hormones such as estrogens.
Favorite: Dr. Nicola’s Detox Support Formulas – these are blends of herbs that are specially formulated to help cleanse and detoxify the liver, offsetting some of the potential side effects of medications. There are two formulas – Detox Support #1 which contains milk thistle, and Detox Support #2 which does not contain milk thistle. I recommend Detox Support #1 for everyone except those taking Mepron and Malarone. Because of possible interactions between Mepron and Malarone and milk thistle, those people are advised to take Detox Support #2. Even patients who are not on medications benefit from the cleansing effects of these liver herbs, and many report rapid symptom improvement. Both formulas are low-alcohol formulas, and are dosed at 30-40 drops three times daily.
Runner-up: Ultra Clear Plus pH by Metagenics – 1-2 scoops daily. This is a powder that contains many of the micronutrients required to upregulate Phase I and Phase II detoxification. In other words, it boosts the enzyme systems required for liver detox and alkalinizes the body. It does not contain milk thistle so is good for individuals taking Mepron (the herb milk thistle has the potential to lower amounts of Mepron in the body and it is therefore recommended that the two not be taken together).
