The Top 10 Lyme Disease Treatments by Bryan Rosner

Do you suffer from health problems that your doctors can’t seem to get a handle on? Are you in pain, or tired all the time, or often unable to think straight? Is the quality of your life slipping away despite everything that you and your doctor have tried? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it is very possible that you are suffering from a health problem that is often ignored or misdiagnosed—Lyme disease. And you are not alone. Lyme is a problem that has left untold numbers of others suffering with a similar range of debilitating symptoms. To make problems even worse, Lyme disease is often accompanied by other tick-borne infections.

Each year the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports more than 20,000 diagnosed cases of Lyme disease in the United States, but many authorities agree that CDC-reported cases greatly underestimate the number of actual cases. Some estimates place the actual number of cases at 10 times or more higher than reported cases. These staggering statistics indicate that Lyme disease is a major U.S. public health problem. The statistics suggest that Lyme disease is reaching epidemic proportions in the United States. Further, Lyme disease is not confined to the United States and is becoming an increasingly important public health concern in Canada, Europe, and other parts of the world.

Lyme disease is becoming so prevalent in the United States that it has even affected the President of the United States. This fact was revealed on August 8, 2007, by the Houston Chronicle, which reported that a year earlier, President Bush was treated for early-stage Lyme disease after developing the “bull’s eye” rash associated with Lyme. As this book makes clear, President Bush was fortunate in that in his case Lyme was detected early. For many other people, including myself, Lyme often escapes early detection, making the standard treatment approach that President Bush received (a course of antibiotics) of limited usefulness.

If you have been diagnosed with Lyme disease, you likely know how severe and debilitating its manifestations can be. I know personally about that struggle also. For eight years I had undiagnosed Lyme disease. My symptoms first began in the early 1990s, soon after I helped friends build a mountain log cabin. Shortly afterwards, I developed symptoms of an out-of season flu. I had not spotted a tick bite nor developed a “bull’s eye” rash. Unfortunately, I did not know much about Lyme disease in those days and did not initially suspect it to be the cause of my health problems. (As medicine is an ever-evolving science, at that time very little was known by the medical profession about Lyme disease.)

Over the next few months my symptoms became progressively worse. Because I had no clue as to the cause of these symptoms, I thought it wise to seek help from my medical colleagues. One consultant that I met with was suspicious of Lyme and performed a Lyme blood test. Subsequently, he dismissed Lyme as a possibility for my symptoms because the blood test was normal. Therefore, like many Lyme patients, on the basis of negative lab results and lack of the tell-tale “bull’s eye” rash, an accurate Lyme diagnosis was missed.

Over the next seven years, my symptoms continued to worsen—persistent fatigue, foggy thinking, and pain in the joints and muscles. Like many patients I have seen in my practice, I was continuously told by the numerous specialists with whom I consulted that Lyme disease was not a possibility. After all, my blood test for Lyme was normal. I could only guess at the nature of my mysterious illness as I failed to adequately respond to the treatments prescribed by my medical colleagues from whom I sought assistance.

The final diagnosis by the Rheumatology medical specialist was that I had a poorly understood disorder called “fibromyalgia.” Whatever relief I experienced from his treatment approach was inconsistent. At this point, I became deliberate in my quest to feel like myself again. I began to research and explore various “alternative” approaches that included acupuncture, nutrition, and herbal therapies. As I incorporated some of these approaches into my treatment regimen, to my surprise, I experienced a significant improvement in my health and discovered a new sense of well-being—something that I had not felt for several years. This improvement in my health led to a new awareness and understanding of how these alternative therapies can complement the conventional treatment therapies that I had been using in my own medical practice. I began to incorporate these techniques into my practice with excellent results. Over time, other “fibromyalgia” patients began to seek me out as I became widely regarded as a physician who was skilled in using alternative, as well as conventional, medical therapies to effectively treat fibromyalgia.

Yet, despite the marked improvements in my health, I still was not completely well. Eight years after the onset of my illness, a fellow physician recommended that I be retested for Lyme disease utilizing a different type of Lyme test—one that was more accurate for detecting Lyme. This time, I tested positive. Within a few months of adding combination antibiotics to my natural therapies regimen, I was well on my way to fully recovering my health. Today, I am helping many other Lyme patients do the same.

If your experience is similar to mine, take heart. In the pages that follow, I will provide you with information that will enable you to develop a powerful, personal action plan for your recovery from Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. In your recovery, you will need the help of knowledgeable Lyme health professionals. In this book, you will learn what to look for in a doctor and how you can locate one that you can work with. In that light, you will also learn about the concept of the “Lyme-aware medical practitioner” (LAMP) that Dr. James Duke referred to in the foreword of this book.

And that’s not all. You will also learn about signs, symptoms, and risk factors for Lyme and the other common tick-borne infections. I will discuss with you the reasons that Lyme disease is so difficult to recognize and diagnose. You will get the answer to the question: Why are so many people with Lyme disease incorrectly told they don’t have Lyme? Very importantly, you will learn how Lyme doctors reliably and effectively make the diagnosis of Lyme disease and the other tick-borne diseases.

Next, you will learn how the body’s natural defense system, the immune system, works to battle Lyme. There are many self-care things that you can do to support your own natural defenses against Lyme. You will further learn how you can have a strong immune system without having an overactive system that causes a problem called “chronic inflammation.” I will share with you how to incorporate principles of diet and nutrition to build a healthy immune system that is able to control Lyme and the other tick-borne diseases. You will be introduced to a very effective nutritional approach to healing and balancing your immune system—the Lyme Inflammation Diet.

You will learn about the core natural therapies and about the antibiotics that are used by Lyme doctors like myself to successfully treat Lyme and the other tick-borne disorders. I will discuss the practical ways that you can relay your health information to your Lyme specialist so that your doctor can most effectively help you. You will further learn about methods of dealing with the most common complications of Lyme such as fatigue, chronic pain, inflammation, brain and neurological problems, and many more. I will also deal extensively with the problem of coping with Lyme—from a spiritual and psychological perspective by giving you a road map of mind/body/spirit techniques that I have found to be extremely useful. Finally, you will be provided with a list of the most helpful Lyme disease organizations, as well as a wealth of other helpful resources.

Knowing firsthand the pain and suffering that Lyme disease can cause gives me a unique perspective on Lyme disease. Based on my personal experience and the experiences of my patients, I also know that it is possible that Lyme disease can be reversed. My message to you is simple: There is hope for you, no matter how long you may have suffered with Lyme disease. As with any illness, the key to recovery lies in knowing what you must do in order to get well. If you are ready to make that healing journey, turn the page so that you can discover the Lyme Disease Solution!

"What I have accomplished with this 500+ page book, The Lyme Disease Solution, is to share my everyday knowledge and practical experience of 10 years as a Lyme-enlightened practitioner (who also is himself a Lyme-survivor). Although I hesitate to use the “cure” word in relation to chronic Lyme, the principles in this book have resulted in a greater than 90% response rate in my patients. At least 60% of my patients achieve long-term improvement that allows them to get off of antibiotics completely."
